Our Commitment to the Curriculum

The EYFS framework, explored in real life.

At Hidden Valley Outdoor Nursery, we deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in a way that feels natural, meaningful and closely aligned with how children learn best. We meet all Ofsted expectations, but we do so through an approach that is child-led, curiosity-driven and rooted in learning outside.

Guided by EYFS, shaped by the outdoors
The EYFS framework forms the foundation of everything we do. It ensures children develop securely across all areas of learning and gives us clear goals for progress. Instead of delivering these areas through formal instruction, we embed them in real experiences outside, surrounded by nature. This allows children to learn in a way that feels purposeful, joyful and relevant.

A blend of Montessori principles and Forest School practice
Our curriculum approach draws inspiration from Montessori ideas of independence, choice and hands-on learning, alongside key elements of Forest School such as exploration, safe risk-taking and child-led discovery. Children follow their interests, choose materials, solve problems and take ownership of their learning, with practitioners offering guidance and support at the right moments.

Phonics and maths in meaningful ways
Early literacy and numeracy are woven naturally into the day using real objects and natural materials. Children spot letter shapes outdoors, create marks in mud or sand, listen carefully to sounds and build early phonics skills through playful activities.
Maths develops through real-life exploration: counting sticks, comparing leaves, measuring puddles, sorting pinecones, building patterns and estimating distances. These practical experiences give early maths and phonics true purpose, helping children understand and remember concepts more deeply.

School readiness that develops naturally
In an outdoor nursery, children build the qualities that genuinely prepare them for school and beyond: resilience, confidence, persistence, communication, social skills and problem-solving. Climbing, negotiating, collaborating, creating and overcoming challenges help children develop strong foundations for future learning. By the time they move on to school, they are capable, adaptable and ready for new routines.

A curriculum that meets standards without losing childhood
We are committed to delivering a curriculum that is compliant with Ofsted, aligned with EYFS requirements and tailored to each individual child. At the same time, we ensure the magic of childhood stays at the centre. Children learn best when they are curious, supported and given time to explore. Our outdoor-first approach ensures every child progresses in all areas while still enjoying the freedom and playfulness that early childhood deserves.
